The Ivanovo region enters into Central federal district. The regional center is Ivanovo, which is so called textile capital of Russia.
The neighboring regions are Yaroslavl, Kostroma, Vladimir and Nizhny Novgorod.
The population of the region makes just over one million persons. Less than 20% of them live in rural localities.
Light industry (in particular, production of textiles) is well developed in the region. Other branches are food industry, electrical energy industry, mechanic engineering, and woodwork.
Such towns of the region as Ivanovo, Palekh and Ples are most visited by tourists as they are included into the Golden Ring of Russia.
The industrial architecture of the 19th century in Ivanovo is of great interest. Besides, here are many other architectural sights in Ivanovo. This is, for example, Preobrazhenskiy cathedral church (end of 19th century), Dyuringer's estate (1920), Shudrovskaya Palatka (17th century) and others.
Palekh is one of the centers of miniature lacquer painting and icon painting. There is the State museum of Palekh art in the town. The architecture of Palekh is very interesting. The major part of houses are made of wooden and decorated with a carving.
Ples is the ancient small town in the north of Ivanovo region. Interestingly there are no industrial enterprises here. There are seven old churches in the town. It would be interesting also for tourists to visit Ples state historical and architectural memorial estate.
